Still, it also means there's nothing quite like it. These different styles smashed together makes for a very weird game. You can see it in how in constantly forces you to slowly squeeze through tiny gaps like some sort of raider of tombs.īut then there's lots of stuff in there that's very Japanese, like the photographs, the combat system, the cooking and, of course, the hair. You can see it in the way it wrestles control away from you to make you look at a scripted event. You can see it in the open-world design, dotted with icons and activities begging to be hoovered up. You can see that developer Square Enix has been eyeing up the western titles it publishes. It takes you right out of the experience. There's only so much panning around and watching rain bead down the car's roof you can do before you decide to start scrolling through your phone instead. It feels like a missed opportunity, as car journeys are such a huge part of the game, but you feel uninvolved.
To stop you from tearing across the wildlands and in a bid to make travel cinematic, Square Enix decided to make the car drive itself.Įven if you choose to manually drive, you can only make minor adjustments while you hold accelerate to stick in the lane. One thing that does get tiring long before this, though, is the car. Combat is engaging right up into the closing credits, and even beyond them when you decide to tackle some of the challenging post-game content.
